It has been over 30 years since Alex Haley published his groundbreaking research. Soon came database sites like The LDS library, Ellis Island databases, and Ancestry.com. Now I can do research from the comfort of my home. I am able to view digital copies of fragile records and trace my ancestry through the years as I may never have been able to do in the past.

Having spent countless hours searching through fragile, dusty files and books, it is easy to become addicted to the convenience of the computer. Rarely a day goes by in my busy life when I do not spend at least a few minutes with the generations that preceded me.

Now, marking over 30 years with my own research, I am able to recognize those documents and resources that allow me to continue through brick walls erected at our shores as more and more databases are released online almost daily.

The recent popularity of the NBC series, Who do you think you are, has once again sparked the interest and imagination of the American people. As we begin to look back into the history of our ancestors and the history of this country we once again discover the determination and fortitude that created the greatest country on earth.

Whether you are just looking to learn a little about your family history, or connect your family to the documented history of our country, the opportunities to get the results you seek abound online. In addition to the databases I mentioned above, LDS and Ellis Island, there are literally hundreds of databases available to the genealogy hobbyist. But finding the good ones can often be a time consuming challenge.

One of the best resources you can start with is a site called Cyndi’s List. This is one of the first resources I discovered over a decade ago. From this central resource you can discover the most valuable resources you can use to document your history. I have watched this list grow to rival even the most commercial resources so it is a good place to start your quest. You can find help on getting started as well as resources you can access to further your journey through time..

Another resource that is often overlooked is the Guttenberg database and Google books. As promoted in the NBC series, the stories that connect us through our histories can be more enlightening than just a collection of names and dates. Reading through the old books, especially personal accounts and diaries, can open our minds to a host of possibilities and provide a connection to our heritage. Understanding the events surrounding the lives of our ancestors, and learning some of the details of the conditions in which they lived can often reveal their personalities and allow us to get to know those who have long since passed into the shadows of time.

Once you begin to discover the resources and digital documents that lead you through the ages, you may begin to feel a desire to handle the actual antique documents and read the accounts first hand. This type of research activity can be quite compelling and lead you past that point of apathy or even frustration. We all reach this point sooner or later. The ability to handle documents containing the words written by our ancestors, or being able to trace your finger over a signature penned by a distant relation can often provide an electric spark that spurs you on to find even more.

If you are lucky your digital search may lead you to uncover such documents as diaries, journals, and family letters that can lead you down yet another road. I was lucky enough to inherit a box of letters my grandmother saved for years. Other family members intended on throwing them out, but naturally, as I had begun to have an interest in genealogy, I insisted that they be given to me for safe keeping. So, I took the box of old letters and stored them for a decade before I really began to delve into my family history. When I finally got around to reading those letters I found a wealth of information and some surprising stories that were the spark that ignited a 30 year quest. I am now posting many of these as digital content at my own sites for others to use in their research.

Combine these with the resources of Ancestry.com with these others and you can leap through the generations in record time. A word of caution, however, is appropriate. New researchers are prone to accept new connections on the basis of name only. This can be a deterrent to uncovering the true connections between families. The availability of digital documents can easily verify the connections you find, if you will only take a little additional time to check them out.

Obesity Is Really Widespread

One who stuffeths.. PUFFETHs. He who indulges.. BULGES

Let’s talk about obesity today, class. How many of you are overweight? Are you obese or just fat? Are you heavy, husky, big-boned, pleasantly plump, flabby, wishy-washy, huge, horizontally challenged, big, large, extra large?? EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA LARGE?!?!

Here’s some stats for ya: 2/3 of the United States population is- WHO CARES!! We get that America is obese. It’s a given. But it’s not about how many other people are fat. The fact is, YOU are fat and you need to do something about it.

Slow Down.. Wait, can you slow down?

I don’t think you can get any slower. You haven’t been to the gym in weeks!..what’s that?.. Months!?!

Alright, get out.

Don’t blame it on genetics either. Excuses are like spoon fulls of cottage cheese: fat people have them (on their thighs and neck), while healthy people eat them for breakfast.

Maybe I’ve offended you. You came here looking for some help, a shoulder to lean on in this time of “I have NEVER weighed this much in my entire life”. I know. But I’m not going to tell you everything is going to be okay. When people stop caring about their health, their weight, their hygiene, and their smell, people die.

Heart disease (AKA HartDZ), cancer, high blood pressure, kidney failure, herpies. Ever heard of them? Well if you don’t get your act together and quit with the doughnuts, McGriddles, and Curly fries, you will not be able to escape the scary truth that your life is now a ticking time bomb.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst, for they are sticking to their diets.

Okay class, time to talk about portions.

Are you aware that when you go out to eat you order a plate that has more food on it than a child in Siberia eats in an entire year? You could feed 4 children, two teenagers, and 1 adult FOR A MONTH with that appetizer, entree, and dessert you and your accomplice enjoyed last weekend.

But seriously, you should eat less.

Let’s get real for a second. Cutting back on your portions is important and it’s not that difficult. Do it in baby steps. When you go out to eat with your spouse or a friend, instead of you both getting the xtra large combo, have one person get the combo, and you just get the sandwich and share the fries and the drink. Dine in and get unlimited refills for crying out loud! How hard is that? Now you won’t be tempted to eat an entire bucket of fries yourself.

If you continually cut back on your portion sizes, soon you will have a tortilla for lunch and be stuffed. You won’t rely on a triple burger and a chocolate shake to fill that enormous tummy of yours.

Diet and Exercise are like Cookies and Milk

Class, now that we’ve established the fact that your eating habits are cause for concern, it’s time to talk about exercise. If you are dieting but not exercising, you can say goodbye to all of your hopes and dreams of being less fat.

I say that because a lot of you will turn to the HCG diet or Atkins diet or something stupid like that. You will rely on some secret formula to get rid of all your heavy problems.

Well, that ain’t gonna cut it.

Only eating 300 calories a day will definitely cause you to lose weight. It will also cause you to go into some nasty weight cycles and your stomach will begin eating itself. You don’t want that.

The trick is not to starve yourself, but to only eat healthy foods and to do so as you exercise frequently.

Mother, A Friend And A Teacher

The elite families’ dwellings in the upscale neighborhood, in a cosmopolitan town, reflect their comfortable lifestyle and social status. The weekend events, socials gatherings and inter actions among families were enjoyable and cherishable. Children of same age group were looking forward to weekend gatherings and enjoyment. At the outset, it appears harmony among them, yet outsiders failed to notice the fissures among their rank and file. The gap between have and have not was distinct and clear. Although the elite society did show kind heartedness superficially, yet their resentment and disregard to less fortunate people were visible in their gatherings.

The deprived families were those who lost their fortune and suffered the loss in terms of men and materials. The noticeable family was of Mr. Richard Reed, who was once rich and famous. His untimely demise made his wife Sara Reed a lonely lady with mounting responsibilities. She was a beautiful lady of remarkable feat. She was very versatile and matured in her outlook. The inheritance of family wealth has gradually depleted. The ripples of hardship were being visible making routine life rather uncomfortable. However, she decided to face the difficulties boldly and sensibly. Her determination and self-confidence were making inroads in her children’s life more meaningfully.

Mrs. Reed was blessed with four children; two boys and two girls. They were all studying in school. Sara knew the hardship she has to face in the coming years. She smiles and hugged both the children and excused herself and joined the group of younger children.

The tiny tots saw their mother was approaching and ran towards her and hugged. She kissed them and took them to the lake side. She showed them the ducklings playing with the duck and enjoying. She told that she also loved them like the duck, and shall be with them all the time. She told them to be loving and caring to all and become a good human being. She also explained to them that the mother duck is taking care of the ducklings. Besides she is also teaching them how to survive and guarding them from dangers.

The following evening, Sara asked her children to wait in her bedroom after the dinner. She said, “There is a surprised about each one of them.” All the children were impatient and eagerly awaiting her arrival. After about fifteen minutes, Sara came to her bedroom carrying a bag. She gave a broad smile and hugged every child. She gave a beautiful parcel to each of them. They asked her permission to open their respective gift wrap. They were so surprised that each gift was unique and to their liking. Every child asked the same question, as to how she managed to buy the gift for them, which were different yet adorable. Every gift was distinctly different and beautiful to their liking. They have individually and collectively thanked her.

Sara hugged every child and advised them to listen carefully and understand to what she is going to say. She asked them to pay attention to everything in life, irrespective of being significant or insignificant. The important thing is not its appearance or values, but its aims and objectives. She also emphasized that they must learn to be patience in their dealings, because it is a virtue. Sara encouraged the children to forgive those who offend them because it is the sign of brave people. She emphasized that the root cause of all evil is telling lies. You should remain honest all the time and be generous to those who are weak and deserving. Lastly, she said that God has been kind to His creations, and we must be thankful for His mercies. They hugged her and expressed their acceptance in unison. They, finally, departed and promised to look ahead towards a brighter future.

June Gloom Got You Down?

What is with this June Gloom? Is everyone experiencing it or is it just us Californians? It seems as though it is never going away and I’m trying not to let it get me down. It comes at the most odd time of the year to me, right when you are truly enjoying the amazing spring sunshine and getting ready for those hot summer days it hits. It’s crazy! It’s like all of a sudden you are pulling out pieces from your winter wardrobe that you just packed away once spring hit. It definitely does not make sense to keep wearing the fabulous sandals and flip flops you just bought when it’s sprinkling outside. I just don’t get it, so I decided to do some research on this June Gloom and find out the facts.

According to Wikipedia (The Free Encyclopedia) June Gloom (also May Gray) is a California term for a weather pattern that results in overcast skies with mild temperatures during the late spring and early summer. The condition is prevalent in many parts of the world where marine stratus or stratocumulus clouds are common, particularly off the western coasts of continents-especially off Peru, Namibia, Western Australia, and California. Such cloud systems are persistent year-round off the coast, yet in certain seasons they blow ashore and create the gloomy “May Gray” effect on land. The June Gloom phenomenon has also been known to occur during the early fall in California.

Early mornings during this period are typically foggy, with an occasional drizzle. The fog turns to low clouds by late morning and early afternoon. Finally, by late afternoon, solar heating is sufficient to evaporate the clouds. Often the overcast will be evaporated (“burned off”) quickly inland, but will linger along the immediate coast.

In California, the number of days from May to June that are gloomy vary from year to year. Cooler ocean temperatures, associated with La Nina, usually foretell a grayer period.

June Gloom has been reported by some Californians to bring on symptoms consistent with seasonal affective disorder. It is often cited as a time of depression. Did you know that Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression or winter blues, is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter or, less frequently, in the summer, repeatedly, year after year? The US National Library of Medicine notes that “some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and crave sweets and starchy foods. They may also feel depressed. Though symptoms can be severe, they usually clear up.” The condition in the summer is often referred to as Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder, and can also include heightened anxiety. There are many different treatments for classic (winter-based) seasonal affective disorder, including light therapies with bright lights, anti-depression medication, ionized-air administration, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and carefully timed supplementation of the hormone melatonin.

So if this June Gloom has got you down, you are not alone. This weather just seems to make me feel like hibernating. Thank goodness it will only be here for a short time then onto our sunshine filled summer we go.

Hypnosis for Panic Attacks – It Can Stop Them for Good

In traditional counseling, you work on “accepting” things. Having attacks isn’t something that you need to “accept”; it’s something that you need to stop. Discussing your problem with a traditional therapist, will not likely make it go away. You need less talk and more action.
